NFL Daily Update 20/08/12

Here it is a pledge to update you Yankers everyday with the latest news from the NFL,  This will be the place to get your daily fix.

#Kansas City Chief’s Pro Bowl linebacker Tamba Hali has been suspended by the league after testing positive for a banned substance.  Hali is seen as the Chiefs best pass rusher after recording 12 sacks last year and was elected to the Pro Bowl for the first time last year.  He has recently signed a new long-term deal with Chiefs.  Hali will be available for the second game of the season and all preseason games.

#Former New Orleans Saints special teams player Steve Gleason has said that no one in the locker room was shocked by former Defensive Coach Gregg Williams supposed shocking team talks.  Gleason, who reveals more in an interview with ESPN set to air later tonight, is quoted as saying “The real problem was no one seemed shocked….There was no discussion of, ‘Wow, did we just hear that?'”.  This obviously raises the question of how many teams were offering bounties? and what did Williams say that made his speech different from other coordinators in the league?

#Buffalo Bills today released linebacker Shawn Merriman.  They announced the news in a one line press release early this morning.  The news seems to have come as somewhat of a surprise to Merriman who tweeted just last night(sunday) that he was excited for practice on Monday.  Merriman who’s 7 season career includes 44.5 sacks 8 forced fumbles and 240 tackles once went by the nickname “lights out”.  Merriman who had been fighting through injury his last few season had tweeted on a few occasions over the offseason about how he felt better than ever and ready for the new season is now on the lookout for a new team.

#Adrian Peterson has stated that he is ready to up his training workload in his quest to be fit for opening day.  Peterson talking from Minnesota Vikings training camp has said he is ready to start practicing with contact.

#Tennessee Titans have reportedly selected Jake Locker as starting QB.  Locker, who was 8th overall pick in 2011 draft,  has been in competition with veteran Matt Hasselbeck since head coach Mike Munchak announced in January that the starting job was up for grabs.

#After last weeks exciting debut Andrew Luck was brought down to earth by the Pittsburgh Steelers defence as he was picked twice in the Colts 24-26 loss on Sunday.  Luck went 16 of 25 with 175 yards and a 1 yard rushing touchdown as the Colts took the Steelers to the wire.  In other news Austin Collie also left the game with a possible concussion.

#San Fransisco 49ers new Running Back Brandon Jacobs has had an MRI on his knee after taking a hit in the 1st quarter of Saturdays game.  The results came back showing no damage allowing Jacobs to get back to practice this week.

# Could the Cleveland Bowns be ready to unleash Trent Richardson on the NFL from day one? Head Coach Pat Shurmur said that Richardson is ahead of schedule in his recovery from surgery.  Richardson, 3rd overall pick in this years draft is a highly explosive player who the Browns hope to build their franchise around.

#In New York it’s normally the Jets stealing the headlines for off field issues (see the mass brawl from a few weeks ago).  But for the first time Tom Coughlin has been called into investigate a prank at training camp.  The video shows Jason Pierre-Paul carrying cornerback Prince Amukamara down a hallway before dumping him in an ice bath.  There has been a huge outcry by some pundits about how the video shows proof of locker room bullying being widely accepted and acknowledged in the NFL.  The video which was posted by punter Steve Wetherford has been causing a stir not only because of the “locker room bullying” but the fact that Amukamara was the victim of rookie hazing last year.  Amukamara was quoted as saying  “Yeah, um, well, I mean, I just don’t get it. I don’t understand the rules, I mean, I’m not a rookie anymore, so I don’t know why I’m getting thrown in the tub. I know it’s all love.

“Yeah, no one ever likes it, especially when it’s you versus eight and no one’s helping you. But it doesn’t mess up our team morale or anything.”  When Coughlin was asked about this on monday he acknowledged that he had only found out an hour before and he was investigating and would take action when he knew more.

# Peyton Mannings home debut in Denver was a mixed bag as he led two scoring drives but also threw two picks in the Broncos 30-10 loss to Seattle Seahawks.

Well that’s the news for today check back tomorrow for more updates.

I’m Matt and I know nothing.
